New York Jazz Academy® Small Ensembles and Combo programs bring together players of similar levels and goals, matching them into small ensemble placements in an effort to maximize player satisfaction.
Small ensembles cover a cross-section of sub-genres (Great American Songbook Standards, Early Jazz, Blues, Brazilian, Afro/Latin, hard bop, bebop, modern jazz, etc.).
Description
This is the general tuition registration page for all in-person NYJA® Small Ensembles. Please submit your registration for your ensemble through this page. Most NYJA® Small Ensembles meet for eight (8) 1hr,50min weekly sessions per semester. Occasionally, an ensemble will meet for seven (7) sessions, depending on calendar holidays. A concert/performance date may, on occasion, be added, either as an extra session or as a substitute session. Schedules and locations are coordinated with each student through the NYJA® Office. Authorize tuition submissions for the 1st five semesters, over the course of the year, and receive the 6th semester at an additional 50% discount
Small Ensemble Times/Dates
Manhattan Small Ensemble section dates/hours for summer semester are listed below. Ensembles delve into a cross-section of jazz repertoire as determined by the ensemble teacher and coaches. Participants tend to range from rhythm section players (drums, bass, piano, guitar) to horns/vocals (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, etc.).
6pm-8pm Mondays: July 7, 14, 21, 28; August 4, 11, 18, 25 (skipping June 30)
6pm-8pm Tuesdays: July 8, 15, 22, 29; August 5, 12, 19, 26 (skipping July 1)
7pm-9pm Wednesdays: July 9, 16, 23, 30; August 6, 13, 20, 27 (skipping July 2)
7pm-9pm Thursdays: July 10, 17, 24, 31; August 7, 14, 21, 28 (skipping July 3)
5pm-7pm Fridays: July 11, 18, 25; August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 (skipping July 4)
12pm-2pm Saturdays: July 12, 19, 26; August 2, 9, 16, 23 (skipping July 5)
3pm-5pm Sundays: July 6, 13, 20, 27; August 3, 10, 17, 24
OTHER TIMES Check with the NYJA® Office regarding other available placements, including additional ensembles in MANHATTAN, SYOSSET, and FOREST HILLS.
NYJA® Small Ensembles are limited ideally to no more than 4 horns (2 is typical) and guitar, 2 pianists, bass, drums. In rare instances, select vocalists may also be eligible to join NYJA® Small Ensembles.
Players work intently with a NYJA® mentor and coach in an effort to take their music to the next level. NYJA® small ensembles often find themselves preparing for public performances, too. Groups have performed recently at Smoke Jazz Club, Silvana Jazz Club, Carnegie Hall, and more.
The NYJA Difference
Small Ensembles run from beginner through advanced levels. Placements require an initial assessment, and musicians are placed according to personal goals and aptitude. In-Person (Manhattan, Long Island, Queens) or online.
